Peter Debenham and Ann Linquist built a lovely tiny cordwood cabin in Colorado. Their original practice building was a wood shed, but this is going to be a multi-use cabin. They are 10 miles from Estes Park in Drake, Colorado. This is a 15′ x 8′ post and beam tiny home, cabin, shelter, shop, studio, etc. 120 sq. ft. with 10 inch cordwood infill. The generous use of bottles has made it even more attractive (just like the handsome couple). The bottles are colored both inside and out (not clear on the outside). The wood is “pine beetle killed” lodgepole pine. If you’ve been to the west you will see this is a great use of an insect destroyed resource. The Tiny Cottage nestles nicely into the mountains, forest and streams. It is what I feel Frank Lloyd Wright would call Organic Architecture. Ann proudly displays her tuckpointing skills. Notice (again) that the bottle bricks are colored on both sides. Peter stands on top of the outstanding framework happily enjoying the sturdiness and a refreshing breeze. . Under construction. Note the well placed log ends, the clean mortar joints and the colored bottles. The roof is a living roof. The Grade Beam is such a good way to save on material cost (both excavation and concrete). A Rubble Trench can be used if you are worried about heaving, but this is mostly a sandy subsoil.

Don Noe built two beautiful cordwood structures in Oregon. His hybrid shed with the cordwood wall was built with 90 percent construction scrap. It was timber framed with timbers from large machine crates. The logs came from an arborist who was planning to use them for firewood, the stone, windows and wood siding were also recycled. The building below is a worm farm. Look at these magnificent door hinges and the Western Red Cedar doors. The bottle brick and cordwood masonry is also very well placed. Don states, “The doors (above) with the limb hinges are for worm bins located on Portland Community College Campus.”

There is a plan-set for a 7'x8' tudor-style garden shed. It is constructed mainly from 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" (90mm x 45mm) wood for the framing, 3/4" (19mm) thick plywood for the floor and wall cladding, and 3/4" x 6" (150mm x 19mm) boards for the roof. The inside floor size is 6ft (1800mm) wide x 6 1/2ft (1950mm) long. The inside width gains another 22 inches" (550mm) at mid-height because of the sloping walls. The inside height at the highest point is around 8ft (2400mm).
