Shane Bird, Vancouver, WA Creating a Foundation: Depending on the size of the building, you’ll likely want to pour a foundation. If you’re building a smaller playhouse, however, you may want to think twice about pouring a foundation and instead focus on building a portable structure. Remember that your children will eventually outgrow the playhouse, and building it in a way that allows you to convert it into a storage shed later on is a smart option. Outdoor Gasoline and Electric Powered Equipment and Small Engines Bird House Peter Debenham and Ann Linquist built a lovely tiny cordwood cabin in Colorado. Their original practice building was a wood shed, but this is going to be a multi-use cabin. They are 10 miles from Estes Park in Drake, Colorado.  This is a 15′ x 8′ post and beam tiny home, cabin, shelter, shop, studio, etc.  120 sq. ft. with 10 inch cordwood infill. The generous use of bottles has made it even more attractive (just like the handsome couple).  The bottles are colored both inside and out (not clear on the outside). The wood is “pine beetle killed” lodgepole pine.  If you’ve been to the west you will see this is a great use of an insect destroyed resource. The Tiny Cottage nestles nicely into the mountains, forest and streams.  It is what I feel Frank Lloyd Wright would call Organic Architecture. Ann proudly displays her tuckpointing skills. Notice (again) that the bottle bricks are colored on both sides. Peter stands on top of the outstanding framework happily enjoying the sturdiness and a refreshing breeze. . Under construction.  Note the well placed log ends, the clean mortar joints and the colored bottles.  The roof is a living roof. The Grade Beam is such a good way to save on material cost (both excavation and concrete).  A Rubble Trench can be used if you are worried about heaving, but this is mostly a sandy subsoil. How much will your project cost? Get Estimates Now Unless you’re building a small barn, have experience or buy a kit with great instructions, this is a project best left to the professionals. In most cases, you’ll need multiple contractors to complete this project. Electricians cost $50 to $100 per hour on average, carpenters cost $30 to $100 and hiring someone to pour the concrete foundation costs an average of $4 to $5 per square foot in labor costs. © Carter Lumber Company, 2018 Foraging for Wild Berries And here's a few notes from Gina: D Using 4×8 sheets of composite siding that comes with a factory primer will allow you to build this shed with the least cost and in the shortest amount of time. Composite siding holds paint better than real wood siding and speeds construction over using a plywood or OSB base and covering with strips of siding. It comes in various grades and thicknesses depending on your budget. The top of the line if you can afford it is called “Duratemp”. It is 7/16 to 5/8 inch plywood covered with a veneer of composite hard board. This offers the best of both worlds, strength and durability. Also “Smart Panel” offers a 7/16 – 5/8 inch thick OSB siding with a veneer of composite hard board which might be more readily available. Regular composite siding will still give you a long service life as long as you keep it painted properly. Most of them are rated for 20 or 25 years. And it’s a good choice for budget reasons. The only downside is that it’s not suitable for use in high humidity areas like Florida and Hawaii. IF you make use of siding panels made from oriented strand boards, chances are that you will spend less money compared to using solid wood and plywood panels. The siding panels come already timed and primed. This will save on the labor and other expenses you would need to prime them. The panels are structural and so you will not waste resources sheathing under the siding.
