Thank you for an excellent article Ron. I take a lot of pride in the quality woodworking tools that I have purchased over the years but increasingly have come to realize that I have just been getting by with my table saw, sliding compound mitre saw, routers, sanders, and electric hand drills. Your article made me realize that I would really benefit from having a Wagner moisture meter, a stand mounted drill press, a jointer, and possibly a planer. Collectively they would represent a substantial investment but purchasing them one piece at a time over say two years would be very manageable. And having learned a lot about all of them from your article made it clear to me that the benefits would be imeasurable.

With a pencil and a protractor, divide the larger disc into 30-degree wedges to create 12 center lines for the bottle indents. Center and trace the smaller disc on top of the larger disc. Next, with a drill press, drill 3/8-in.-deep holes on the 12 center lines with the 1-7/8-in. Forstner bit, spacing them between the disc’s outer edge and the traced circle. Next, divide the smaller disc into 60-degree wedges and drill six more 3/8-in.-deep holes with the Forstner bit.
Crafting bookcases, tables and even small wooden toys requires a number of different tools. Sears has a massive selection of woodworking tools to help make items large and small. Saws will trim boards to the right size, lathes and lathe tools will add brilliant details and vises will hold pieces together while wood glue sets. Each tool has a role in making your job easier and the final product better.
Another important factor to be considered is the durability of the wood, especially in regards to moisture. If the finished project will be exposed to moisture (e.g. outdoor projects) or high humidity or condensation (e.g. in kitchens or bathrooms), then the wood needs to be especially durable in order to prevent rot. Because of their oily qualities, many tropical hardwoods such as teak and mahogany are popular for such applications.

Old doors laid across sawhorses make great temporary workbenches, but they take up a lot of space when you’re not using them. Instead of full-size doors, I use bifold doors with hinges so I can fold them up when I’m done working. They’re also easier to haul around in the pickup for on-the-road jobs. — Harry Steele. Here are 12 more simple workbenches you can build.
